Before You Hang Wallpaper

When you're decorating, wallpaper can seem like the ideal answer to your color scheme dilemma, until you get to the actual work.  But wallpapering needn't be the chore it can seem, if you set yourself up for job first, and take it one step at a time.

The first thing to do, is determine what kind of wallpaper you have.   There are two types, standard and vinyl.  The standard is an older type that does not come pre-pasted.  That means you will need to lay it on the floor or over a table covered with drop cloths, in order to brush on the paste that will glue it to your walls.  Standard wallpaper has both advantages and disadvantages.  Among its good points, is that you can overlap the edges slightly to match up a pattern, because it will stick to itself, where vinyl paper will not. That type must be lined up with the edges flush to each other.  On the other hand, standard paper is more fragile than vinyl and can be torn in the gluing or application process, so it must be handled more carefully.  But handled right, it can also allow you to stretch it just a little to get the positioning right.

Vinyl wallpaper is much easier to handle and hang and also withstands moisture better, which makes it the ideal choice for bathrooms and kitchens.  It won't stretch however, so the way it goes on the wall, is the way it's going to hang.  Preparing it to put on the wall is fairly simple, once you have precut the sections you'll be needing for the room, and marked the wall with matching numbers so they are placed in the right order.  Just slip one end of the pre-pasted strip into the water trough, and pull it up the other side, and it should be thoroughly moistened.

Before you attempt to hang any wallpaper, do any extra jobs, like painting trim, or filling holes and cracks with spackle. Paint must be allowed to dry a week, as glue can damage paint if it is still wet.  For walls that have high or semi gloss finishes, a light buffing with sandpaper will provide a better surface for the wallpaper glue to adhere to.  But if you have a flat paint or wood surface underneath, you're wise to apply a coating of wallpaper sizing, which helps the paper to slide into place.
