How to Paint Furniture

One way of saving money while getting the item of wood furniture that you really want, is to buy unfinished pieces that you have to assemble yourself and then paint.  This is relatively simple, and involves only priming and applying the paint, or using a stain and varnish.  But if you're willing to invest a little time and effort, you can take an old piece of furniture that you have, or a treasure you discovered at someone's yard sale, and turn it into something that would cost you a small mint to buy in an antique store.

Let's say you have found a nice telephone table at an auction or garage sale.  The first thing you need is a proper workspace where there is plenty of room and ventilation.  If you must use the basement, make sure the windows are left open.  Garages and workshops with windows are better, since the project may take several days, and you don't want it disturbed.  Put paper down on the floor, and make sure you have a dust mask and work gloves.

Start by stripping the paint or varnish, either by sanding with fine grit paper, or using a liquid sander, which is particularly handy if the legs of the table are "turned", and have ridges and troughs.

Once it is completely sanded and clean, you should vacuum the work area, so that no particles are floating around when you start applying wet coats.  You should also wipe the table with a lightly dampened cloth to remove any dust.

Next, you'll need to put on a coat of primer and let it dry.  This can take a couple of hours, but check the can to see the manufacturer's recommendations. Don't forget the underside of the top, and the shelf underneath.  If the finish of the primer seems uneven or spotty, apply a second coat and let it dry as well.  Now you're ready to apply the paint, using even strokes of a brush, in the direction of the wood grain.
