How to Decorate a Kid's Room

Those who have creative urges, usually enjoy decorating their whole home, and there's no reason why you shouldn't use those skills to decorate a kids room as well.  After all, it's their personal space, and should say something about them.  Besides, kids just love the special feeling of being surrounded by their favorite characters, or having something that is just for them.

Decorating for kids can get as complicated as you want to let it.  That means anything from small touches with the curtains and bedding, to actually getting a new bed that fits in with the décor, such as those that are shaped like cars, or four poster canopy beds for the little princess in your life.

Generally speaking, most parents stick to wall, carpet and bedding as the items that will reflect their child's choices.  When you have a little one who is hyped on Star Wars, that can be as simple as a matching sets of sheets, bedspread, duvet, and curtains with the character theme.  Depending on the age of the child, you may choose to add features like a toy box that is shaped like R2D2, or models of the various Star Wars spaceships that the child can assemble, and which you can hang from the ceiling for them, afterwards.  Younger children also enjoy small touches like glow in the dark decals of moons, stars and planets that can be placed on the ceiling, and fit right in with the space theme.

Very often, you may need to make compromises.  A child may ask for more than is in your budget to do, but the savvy parent can often save on their decorating project by building bookshelves and toy boxes themselves, and applying character decals.  Sewing your own curtains and pillow cases from a character or themed sheet that you got on sale, can add something of what the child asked for, when a bedding set may be too expensive.  If there is material left over, you can get a bedspread in one of the mains color of the character, and use the extra patterned material to make a ruffled edge for it.
