Feng Shui Design

The practice of Feng Shui as it originated in China thousands of years ago, was meant to provide an environment in which an individual would be able to achieve maximum chi, or life force energy.  If furniture, or even windows are in the wrong locations, or even not admitting sufficient sun to balance the yin and yang of your home, then the flow of chi is interrupted.

Determining Feng Shui, is based on a person's gender, and year of birth.  From these, a chart is created, showing that person's four lucky, and unlucky directions, as associated with the points of a compass.  This is traditional Chinese Feng Shui, a practice that is being seen less and less in North America.  While there are various "sects" to Feng Shui belief, in some cases, it has evolved to suit the personal preferences of a people or culture, or to give them greater flexibility in creating the chi that is best for them.

Traditional Feng Shui design places a person in a house, and the items in the house, according to their lucky directions, making the necessary changes to doors, windows, location of furniture, etc.  Modern Feng Shui design, takes as their ba gua, the direction that the front door of the house faces.  Whether this is a valid use of Feng Shui design is hotly debated amongst the different factions.

Today, designing or furnishing a house from the ground up, generally means charting its "facing" direction, or the placement of the door, with all other directions and their impact on the owner's chi, related to that positioning.
