Country Style Décor
The resurgence of
country décor nearly 25 years ago, brought the countryside into a
good many homes that were often fairly long distances from the
country. Nowhere in the home was this more evident than in the
kitchen.
Geese were perhaps the
first barnyard animals to waddle into our homes and settle down.
The goose was a nice basic color- white. And frequently was
portrayed with colored neckerchiefs, or in colorful scenes. This
lent itself to different color combinations for the kitchen, and
also made popular several "old" or country style shades of paint,
including dusty rose and a gray-blue.
With the new craze for everything with geese, some old accessories
enjoyed a re-birth, and newer ones joined them in the heart of a
country home, the kitchen. Among the accessories or decorating
techniques that enjoyed instant success, was stenciling, and
wallpaper borders. In a kitchen where the country style décor
centered around geese, you might have found the lower half of the
walls painted a dark green, with the upper half a cream color, and
wall paper border running along the dividing line. Or the walls may
have been once solid color, with a stenciled row of geese marching
along the top of the walls, all around the room, to be complemented
by matching stencils on the cupboard doors.
Country décor in general tends to hark back to simpler patterns and
colors, with country items for accessories. This can result in a
bright kitchen painted a sunny yellow, with gingham curtains, a
matching tablecloth and chair cushions, and the touches of color
added by a collection of rooster themed items from salt and pepper
shakers, to sets of accessories with the same picture/pattern,
including placemats, towels, letter holders, appliance covers, bread
boxes and potholders.
