How to Make a Cork Wreath

If you love Christmas wreaths, but aren't crazy about trekking around the woods looking for fir tips, there are lots of fun ways to make distinctive wreaths of your own design.

One popular way is by using wine corks.  With their semi-light bulb shape, they add more dimension to a wreath than something that lies flat.

If you like wine yourself, collect corks throughout the year, either your own or from friends you know that have the occasional bottle.  However, the corks can be bought at craft stores, and because of the size, make a great holiday project for smaller fingers.

While you're picking up corks, you also need to buy a straw wreath, and some floral wire to make a hanging loop.  The shop may also have the extra long toothpicks you'll need.

Take your corks and put a hole in the smaller end of each one, with a metal skewer or ice pick.  Then insert one end of the toothpick, turn the cork around and insert the other end of the toothpick into the straw wreath, so that the top is angled out a bit. Work your way around the wreath, inserting more corks behind and a bit below the previous ones.  The wreath can be as full as you want to make it, and when done, often looks a bit like pinecones.

Use your floral wire to tie around the wreath and make a short loop for hanging.  Then decorate with a bow of crepe paper, or ribbon, and add any little touches that appeal to you like a dusting of artificial snow, or berries and small poinsettias that come on metal stems for inserting into the wreath between the corks.
